- Open photo.
- Press [D] to set background default color of white.
- Press CTL [-] to zoom out.
- Press [F] to see the desktop gray area that surrounds the image.
- Press [C] to switch to the Cropping tool and drag out a cropping marquee border on the image.
- Drag out a side handle or corner point of the marquee border outside the image. The gray area that the cropping marquee selected outside the image will become the white canvas space.
- Press [ENTER] to crop.

Automatic Straightening and Cropping of Scanned Photos
- Open scanned photo.
- Go to File>Automate>Crop and Straighten Photos.
- Photoshop will find straight edges on your photos and automatically crop and straighten the photos and copy each into its own separate window.
Rule of Third Cropping
- Edit>Preference>Guides, Grid & Slices >Grid enter 33.3 in Gridline Every Field
- Then choose percent on from the pop up menu on the right, change the default setting from 4 to 1.
- Click [OK].
- View>Show> Grid.
- Return to your Image.
- Press V to switch to MOVE tool then position the image on your desired location.
- Crop image.
